Tax Help NM: A Lifeline for Those in Need
For many low-income individuals and families, navigating tax filing can be a stressful and uncertain process. But thanks to Tax Help NM, a free service supported by United Way of North Central New Mexico, countless individuals are receiving much-needed assistance—and in many cases, unexpected refunds that make a real difference in their lives.
A Volunteer Making a Difference
One of the dedicated volunteers making an impact is Delores Garcia, a retired CPA (Certified Public Accountant) who has found purpose in giving back to the community. She volunteers at The Rock at Noonday day shelter, where she helps individuals navigate the often-complex world of tax filing.
Delores dedicates her time to simplifying the tax process for clients, a task that can feel overwhelming for those facing financial hardship. “Most people find taxes really complicated,” she explained. Through Tax Help NM, individuals can bring their necessary information and return a week or two later to pick up their completed tax returns—all at no cost.
The Emotional Impact of Tax Assistance
Beyond the numbers, Delores witnesses firsthand the emotional impact of this vital service. “Most of the women cry when they find out they’re going to get money back,” she said. “They feel like it’s something positive that has happened in their lives in a series of bad things that have happened to them. It’s a light for them.”
Tax Help NM is about more than just filing taxes—it’s about empowering individuals and changing lives. Delores recalls one woman who sent her a heartfelt thank-you note. “She wrote me saying that it made a difference in her life. She was able to move out of a crummy apartment.” These moments fuel Delores’s passion for volunteering. “They’re all important. You’re helping somebody, hopefully, make a change in their life.”
Addressing Misconceptions and Increasing Awareness
Delores highlights a common misconception that low-income individuals don’t need to file taxes. “The most common comment I get is, ‘I didn’t think I had to file because I’m low income,’ and that’s correct—they don’t have to file. But they’re unaware of a New Mexico low-income rebate.” Tax Help NM ensures they don’t miss out on potential refunds they’re entitled to, putting money back into their pockets.
The transient nature of the community makes accessibility crucial. “This is the perfect place for them. This is where they feel comfortable, in my opinion,” she said.
One of the most important things Delores wants the public to know? “That it’s free. Some of these homeless people are paying $25 to $50 to get their taxes done. And that takes most of their refund from the state. Even if you don’t think you have to file, you may be eligible for a refund, and it’s all free.”
Finding Purpose Through Volunteering
Despite the challenges, the gratitude Delores receives makes it all worthwhile. “They almost always say thank you for volunteering to do this, which is gratifying.”
For Delores and many others, volunteering is about more than numbers—it’s about providing hope, support, and a brighter future for those in need.
