United Way of Central New Mexico today announced that MacKenzie Scott has donated $10 million to support the organization’s community-based work in health, financial stability and education. Scott announced the gift on Medium.

Scott’s donation comes at a critical time for United Way of Central New Mexico (UWCNM), as it responds to the unrelenting demands for services due to the social and economic upheaval of the past year. This much-needed resource will enable UWCNM to expand services to people in need. UWCNM’s programs and services ensure that individuals and families in central New Mexico have the opportunity to achieve potential through education, that they are healthy and safe, are financially stable and live life with dignity.

United Way of Central New Mexico is deeply grateful to Ms. Scott for this transformational donation to enable important ongoing work,” said Rodney Prunty, CEO of United Way of Central New Mexico. “COVID-19 remains a threat to our communities as we continue our work to mitigate the health and economic impact of the pandemic. This generous donation will ensure that this work continues through the recovery phase and help us to rebuild and come back even stronger.”

United Way Central New Mexico has provided grants and services for those facing hardship, particularly in the wake of the pandemic. More than $1.2 million has been granted to nonprofit organizations for COVID-19 relief with particular emphasis on alleviating food insecurity and other basic needs. This donation will support United Way of Central New Mexico to reimagine and rebuild so that everyone has the opportunity to thrive for years to come; a task force will be assembled to identify how the funds can be best utilized in support of the UWCNM mission and long-term goals.
