Housing stability
When children are homeless, the stress, trauma and academic disruptions they experience often lead to problems in school – problems that can continue throughout life. Data tell us that students impacted by housing instability often encounter chronic absenteeism, missing out on learning opportunities which can be difficult to recover from. For example, missing ten percent or more school days can translate into third graders unable to master reading, sixth graders failing subjects and ninth graders dropping out of high school (NM Public Education Department).
When families have stable housing, they are better positioned to achieve their educational goals, leading to better long-term employment and health outcomes.
UWNCNM delivers a two generation approach to family well-being in partnership with the Siemer Family Foundation, United South Broadway and the Veterans Integration Center through a preventative program for families who are one emergency away from becoming homeless. Families enhance valuable skills that contribute to self efficacy, such as financial literacy and resource attainment. This leads them to experience stability and thrive, a
key outcome for Rising Together.
Through the generosity of the Siemer Family Foundation, housing case managers receive technical training to help families at risk of homelessness discover solutions and resources that provide dignity and safe housing.
